In preparation for the FORM WORKSHOP, come hone your improv skills.

*FORM WORKSHOP and PERFORMANCE
Saturday
2PM - 5PM (workshop)
7PM (show)
Learn a new form from Bill, and perform it Saturday

AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO SCENEWORK
Sunday
10AM - 1PM
Many of the tradition improv rules and concepts separate us from the real world. By looking towards the rules of life we will discover how to create more natural and textured scenes that are easier for us to play and more compelling for an audience to watch.

THE UN-LOGIC OF EMOTIONS
Sunday 2PM - 5PM
Emotions aren't illogical, they are un-logical. As such they obey far different rules than the ones we use for verbal chess matches. We will explore those rules and find ways to leverage emotions and emotional changes to further our scenes.

Workshops are $40 apiece or $140 for all four!

BIO
Bill Arnett has improvised in Chicago for two decades, performing with some of the most popular and esteemed groups. As an instructor of improvisation he travels internationally always bringing his depth of knowledge and remarkable eye for improv problem solving. The former head of the iO Theater training center, he launched the Chicago Improv Studio as a way to explore the concepts introduced in his book, The Complete Improvisor.

Intro to Stand-up Comedy

Dates: Tuesdays | 8pm - 10pm | Starting June 4th, 2019
Instructor: Janan Araujo-Siam

8 weeks | 16 classroom hours
With an end of class showcase on Tuesday July 30th at 8:30 PM

No experience necessary. You don't even have to be funny.

Whether you are beginning stand-up comedy as a career, a fun side gig, or you're already in this hellish choice of a job, this class is for you. This is also a great class if you're just curious about stand-up or you want to try it out as an exercise in character building! Together, we'll plunge into the world of being alone on a stage with everyone expecting you to be amazing and pretending that this is no big deal.

This course will cover joke writing techniques, stage presence practices, and how to be self-led in everything you do as a stand-up comedian. We'll uncover anything holding you back from excellence and comfort on stage and integrate it into your voice as a comedian so that you leave feeling empowered in your human quirks rather than discouraged by them.

Janan Araujo-Siam

A walking stereotype, this half-white half-Palestinian, yoga teaching Muslim lesbian named Janan picked up comedy when she realized she loved making people laugh and, more importantly, the attention. Her humor is drawn from a deep self-awareness of human flaws and triumphs and she's guaranteed to make some sort of liquid escape your body. It's usually tears of laughter. Usually.

She's had many years of experience teaching in a variety of subjects and is excited to utilize all this experience to deliver an excellent course on stand-up comedy.

Improv to Sketch
8 Weeks of class and a Sketch Show
Saturdays 2-5pm
Starting March 2nd, 2019

Location: Upstairs at 3708 Main St, Houston, TX 77002

This class will utilize grounded 2-person scenes to mine premises and create sketches. Taught by BETA's Founder, Jeromy Barber, we will work together to create and develop a fully produced sketch show. Many sections of the class will be taped.

If you want to use your improv tools to create scripted work, this class is for you. It's the heart of what BETA Theater is about.

All development, scripting, casting, and rehearsal will occur during class. All material for the class and show will be created in the class utilizing improv and table writing sessions. There's no need to come to class with already written material. No homework required.

The class develops content from week to week, so absences are discouraged, and repeated absences may lead to being dropped from the class without refund.

Anyone who has completed any Level 1 Improv class anywhere is welcome to register. All sketches will be produced for the stage, and at the teacher's discretion, some will be considered to be produced and presented on video.

**Due to the collaborative nature of the development process, all completed content will be owned exclusively by BETA Theater**

Expert Matters Kids Edition!

EXPERT MATTERS is a monthly improv show at BETA Theater. We've taken the Armando form (a monologist + a team of improvisers) and given it a heady twist. Instead of a monologist, each month we will feature an expert in any given field who will answer audience questions pertaining to their field of expertise. A group of improvisers will perform scenes based on the information shared. It's like TedTalk and an Improv Show had one informative/hilarious show baby.

We've adapted this show for a very special KIDS EDITION! This month we are joined by Chef Brandi Key who will share her culinary expertise (and maybe some tastings!) with your kiddos.
