ABOUT THIS EVENT

BETA Theater is very excited to open its doors once more with this incredible class taught by our good friend Saurabh Pande. This class is open to any performer and improv student in the city who is looking for a new challenge in their practice. This improv class will bring all of Saurabh's experience in Chicago and Los Angeles to us in Houston.

This is an IN-PERSON and INDOOR class. BETA will be closely following CDC guidelines in order to assure the safety of our students. All students will need to be fully vaccinated as this class will be held indoors.

BIO

Saurabh Pande is a proud Houston native. While in Houston he performed with The College Improv Tournament National Champions, Glaundor. He was also a main company member of ComedySportz Houston. In 2014 he made his way to the icy streets of Chicago. While there, he was on the Second City national touring company, trained and performed at iO, and was a main company member of the Improvised Shakespeare Company. Most days you can find him in LA enjoying the $15 avocado toast but currently, he is back in Houston enjoying the $11 avocado toast.


About this Event

As we creep back from the quarantine, BETA is offering a 4 week skills class that runs Monday evenings in May. This class is taught by Jeromy Barber, and it's for anyone. No pre-requisites. No experience necessary. This class is limited to 6 students!

Level 1 Improv - Intro to Improv
The PERFECT Class FOR ALL! Actors, writers, comics, BUSINESS TYPES, and NORMAL FOLKS. This class is about the foundations of scenic improvisation. Students will practice supporting each other with agreement, building creatively by listening for patterns, and making choices on stage with confidence. Whether you want to be up on stage performing or not, this is the perfect class for you!

IMPROV LEVEL 2

Level 2 will fine-tune skills from level one and leverage them into sustained scene work. We will focus on grounded, two-person scenes and introduce Scene moves and mechanics that make up longer formats. Improvisors will begin learning to find game and play it out in their scene work.

Level 3 takes the tools learned in 2 and applying them to complete long form sets. Improvisors will learn the timing, mechanics and game of a long form improv show. Starting with a suggestion and an opening, students will utilize improv mechanics to heighten themes and games discovered through scene work. The class will culminate in a recital of a 25 minute mix-tape set.

IMPROV LEVEL 4

working in an ensemble is the focus of Level 4. Students will be taught the structure of the harold, the most traditional and established  long-form improvisation format. students will learn to find the game of each scene and play it out in several iterations and forms. individual creativity will be harnessed to serve the piece. each performer is an important voice in a cohesive group. the harold will open up the possibilities of thematic exploration while teaching the humility of ensemble play.

improvising theater: advanced long-form
